Heating fires account for 36% of residential home fires in rural areas every year. Often these fires are due to creosote buildup in chimneys and stovepipes. All home heating systems require regular maintenance to function safely and efficiently.

Let's be careful and safe this Winter!

For quite a few years, Wendell had no fire protection.
A bucket brigade was, like most towns, the first form of fire protection.
In the early 1900's a two wheeled cart with chemical tank was purchased and was used until 1915, when the village upgraded to two 40 gallon chemical engines for $750.00, one of which is in the museum in Elbow Lake.
A volunteer fire department was also formed at this time, along with a fire bell mounted on a tower.
Later the village along with a check from the state for $85.00, purchased a seven passenger Hudson touring car, to be remodeled to carry one of the chemical tanks.
In the year, 1940 the surrounding townships of Stony Brook, North Ottawa, and Lawrence entered into a joint purchase agreement for fire protection and equipment.
The next vehicle purchase that I know of was for a 1939 International 'war time model fire truck' for $2625.00 from the Luverne Fire Company in 1942. Numerous vehicles have passed through the doors of the fire department since.

A new fire department building was built in 1962, moving the fire department from a single garage by the water tower to a new 36 x 64 double door, heated building which could house three trucks and a meeting room. The building is now being used as a storage building for the city.

In the fall of 1993, the village started the construction of a new building.- a 40x120 foot steel building.
A 24 x 40 meeting room, with bathrooms and storage area and a 40 x 96 truck storage area with 3 - 20 foot automatic doors, and electric floor heating. Also, three of the truck bays have 6" overhead water fills. Housing now the fire departments trucks and rescue equipment.
